I am using a Sierra Wireless MC8790 integrated 3G module, which gives no problems on a normal Internet connection.

I am able to connect to our VPN using the secure matrix, and can work online in that way for a while, but after some time, the connection seems to stall, and no further operation is possible. No error messages are generated by the Juniper Network Connect software so I have no indication that anything is wrong, apart from the fact that attempts at accessing functions and loading pages are unsuccessful. The green lights on the small padlock icon in the system tray also indicate communication only from one side, with no response from the other.

I also connect to the same VPN using my wired LAN connection, and never experience any of the above issues.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what is causing this issue and how I can fix it?

The symptom seems to suggest some kind of compatibility issue between the "Sierra 3G Watcher" software which is used to establish the Internet connection, and the Juniper Network Connect software.

It is possible that the 3G connection is filtered. This means that you cannot connect to the servers because the filters applied to the connection are in effect. Try contacting the carrier network you use to connect and explain this situation. They will probably remove the restriction.

Is this software a thin client, an ActiveX control, or what? Where can i find info on it, like a white paper or something?

Network Connect is an actual software program installable via your VPN portal page if operated by Juniper software technology.

You can find more information on it at Junipers direct website.

Network Connect is an actual program that allows you to connect to your VPN portal without actually going to the website directly. Instead, it allows you to connect as another client NODE on your internal network, which provides faster access to your VPN.

If you login via the VPN site, it will not list your computer as a remote NODE of the internal network, and everything will be cached through the site DNS. This makes the requests very slow, and the VPN a bit hard to navigate around. However, it is the most recommended method, as Network Connect can cause issues on complex computer setups.

Running Network Connect is the prefered method to link your machine up with your internal network, and I recommend it.

The Network Connect component can be downloaded as trial software from Junipers website; however, if you have a Juniper VPN box, (the actual VPN hardware), on your network, you can configure Network Connect as an installable component on your VPN portal. It's recommended you take a look at the setup requirements for that. It is not advisable to install Network Connect separate from your VPN, as many of the DNS and caching configurations are complex.
